Perfection Protest – Brene Brown brings it!

Its been a running theme in my life and conversations with friends for the past month… the blasted beast, PERFECTIONISM!  Yikes!  And is it ever beastly!  For me it creates a paralyzing overwhelm & causes me to procrastinate until I feel physical pain!

It is also very ironic, as I really believe that IMPERFECT is gorgeous!!!  I always give my clients the disclaimer that I’m not the type of photographer who is going to do retouching on their photos to hide your imperfections, nor will I use photoshop to make anyone look thinner, younger, more rested…  I truly think you are beautiful just as you are, and please let me use my vision and my skills to capture that beauty and SHOW YOU how freaking gorgeous you are!  Just be yourself and relax as best as you can, and let me do the rest.

So here I find myself all too often not taking my own advice.

Why do I blog so seldom?  Because I have been waiting until I had my blog set up just right, or I had the perfect thing to talk about, or until I got caught up with everything else, or until I lost weight…  and that’s just, well, ABSURD.  I am who I am and this is what it is… right now.  In the moment.  And this moment, its the very most important thing.

Even as I write this, I’m thinking, “I should wait to post this.  There’s a weird color cast on my nose in this photo.  I am a terrible writer…”  But this time I’m not going to listen that voice.

I am joining the Perfect Protest!  Dr. Brené Brown has a new book called The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are and I am super psyched to get my hands on a copy!

I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.  Leave a comment for me, would ya please?

ETA: Zoë wanted in on the action too!!!!!

with love and joy,

You inspire me! In my quest to be kind to others, I often forget to be kind to myself. I need to give myself that same permission and acceptance. Thank you lovely lady xo

brilliantly said. I am amazed at how well you do the thing you do – I’m always being photographed by you (go figure) and I am amazed at how well the images turn out. I always tell people “she makes us look so good” when in fact you’re just seeing what looks good.
As far as your own image concerns are concerned, you’ve just got to go with the flow and listen to your husband.

I love this, my dear! Thanks for sharing! It’s funny – I had an experience recently of having to SLAP together a blog entry very hastily, with much anxiety and regret because I felt I wasn’t perfecting it… and I got the most amazing feedback about it from all directions! It made me realize that I needed to take a big step back from obsessive perfectionism (yet again) and have greater faith in the natural, unforced quality of my work! Yay! I may have to join you in this protest – I love it!
